upper 50s san francisco. upper 60s in the east bay. rain on the way. the computers might not see it live cams cams ra cameras do >> low cloud layer, san francisco. wednesday, february 12th. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news in the south bay this morning where police are investigating a deadly stabbing in the heart of downtown san jose. it happened this morning outside a club on santa clara street between 1st and 2nd. that is where "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live with the latest. you've been talking to investigators, bob? >> reporter: we have. talking to a lieutenant. good morning. you can see where police are on the scene here on west santa

clara, looking down at the scene at first street. this happened around 1:15 last night. close to last call. two men according to police, both in late 20s, drinking inside johnny v.'s, it's a bar/nightclub behind the van you see right there. it's about a block and a half down the street on the left side on west santa clara at 1st. some sort of argument, disturbance, according to police, spilled out onto the sidewalk and then escalated when one man pulled a knife and stabbed the other once in the upper body taking place on the corner of 1st and west santa clara. paramedics attempted cpr but no luck. this man declared dead at the hospital. witnesses pointed out the suspect to police. sounds like he tried to get away but not in the sense that he was running but casually walking away, trying to blend in but it didn't work. come back out here live, police arrested him right over here at our live location at the corner

of west santa clara street, that's where they found him and the knife on the ground, not too far away. he's been taken downtown where he is in custody, not clear on how cooperative he is being. they do not believe this is gang related but also not sure what relationship these two men might have had, whether strangers or something else going on. as you can imagine, with the bar, a lot of witnesses. police have sorted out those witnesses, found out which ones were useful, which ones weren't. they have been interviewing or about to interview, to get a better sense of what sounded like a fight, argument that turned into a fight, and obviously a homicide. the sixth homicide for the city of san jose this year. live in downtown san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." we continue to watch the weather as well. a live look at san francisco. it looks pretty clear out there.

but fog a major issue yesterday. could be again today particularly in napa. checking san jose, skies looking clear as well. let's check in with christina. >> good morning. everybody at home, wednesdays can be tough. fog problematic for your drive. up in the north bay, make sure you're aware of that off the bat. scott is right on point as usual. napa dropping in visibility. over the past 15 minutes fall friend 6 miles to a mile and 3/4. take you into the south end of the bay area, half moon bay has fallen to a half a mile of visibility, want to travel cautiously, over 92 towards the ocean. as you make your way out the front door, you might not see the fog but it doesn't mean you're not going to run into it on your drive. give yourself extra time. you want to be ready for anything. 46 in half moon bay. san francisco, nice and clear for now, expecting fog to roll in throughout the next couple of hours. we'll keep you updated.

i'll be back in a bit with highs today and all important valentine's day forecast. back to you. >> thanks, christina. 5:03. new information about the statewide amber alert issued after witnesses told oakland police they saw a man force his way into a car, abducting a teenager and an elderly man. "today in the bay's" christie smith live in oakland. what are police saying today? >> reporter: good morning to you. we heard from oakland police this morning. they say no sign of any of them, the elderly man, teenage girl or the man believed to have kidnapped and car jacked them from a safeway parking lot in broad daylight. police released fbi-enhanced video of the suspect take friend surveillance video of the safeway store near highway 13. the man allegedly stuffing lobster tails and steaks before a work ar approached him and he threatened that person with a knife and ran out.

this man's jacket, headphones, baseball cap are unique and possibly recognizable to someone out there. witnesses say he ran outside and used a knife to force his way into a car with an elderly man and teen girl inside. >> this investigation will not stop. investigators will work through the night. >> it's unthinkable these days. you don't know if you're going to go back home. >> reporter: this happened around 1:00 in the afternoon. chp activated an amber alert asking people to look for a burgundy infinity suv but later modified that to a sedan. this morning, the signs are lit up on the freeway for a sedan with license plate 6jfm648. police say even now still they have not received any missing persons report that match the man or the teen. they believe that finding that license plate, though, is probably their best bet to

solving this. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> so many cell phones went off with the alert. good to see the amber alert signs up as well. a shocker at sochi winter games. >> yeah. no three-peat for snowboarder shaun white. janelle wang joins us live at sochi games. big disappointment for shaun white, surprise to many. >> reporter: i know, big surprise, and very disappointing. first, sochi, it's beautiful today. it's just over 60 degrees, probably the most beautiful day we've had so far. shaun white, not so hot last night, fourth place. the first time the american men have never medaled in the halfpipe snowboard. switzerland's iouri podladtchikov won gold after pulling off the trick the yolo, you only live once. shaun white was so gracious and congratulated him when the final scores came down. a likable side to shaun white. >> for me, it's a tough -- it's

pea soup. seven-day forecast the bottom of the screen, we have more rain on the way as we get into the weekend. for the next couple of days, only shower activity we're anticipating in san francisco and north of that golden gate bridge. look at the highs for today. 68 degrees. fog burns off early out in the tri-valley versus 58 in san francisco where that burn-off is not going to occur until 2:00 p.m. what we're working with when it comes to showers. stop the clock on futurecast. this afternoon, 4:00 p.m., showers start that will continue into thursday at 4:00 p.m. and as we get into the weekend, we have a better chance for rain. that's the weather story i want to talk about in my next report. first, check on the drive. mike, you got us to work safely yesterday. >> i'll take credit, if you got there safely. weather report part ii. live look, 580 westbound with headlights growing in the mist. fog, low clouds throughout this

part of dublin out of livermore. this is what you see live view. but look at the traffic maps we don't have orange highlighted like yesterday. sensors are not picking it up, that's how fine it is. but it is there. maybe an issue for drivers and that's why you have human intervention there. smooth drive for 580, toward the dublin interchange without issues. crash reported, a truck into the side rail at off-ramp for monument. the north bay, right there, vallejo, see the orange there? american canyon, a tougher drive and tougher view. but clear look at bay bridge toll plaza -- bay bridge new york problem from the toll plaza into san francisco. back to you. >> thank you. 5:10. major car seatmaker issuing one of the biggest recalls in u.s. history. federal regularities say it's not enough. the u.s. bobsledder who had

the my ride size for me car seats may not unlatch, trapping kids, which could become dangerous during a crash or vehicle fire when you need to get out. seats were sold between 2009 and 2013. national highway traffic safety administration says they should recall seven infant car seat models with the very same buckles. san mateo officials trying to figure out what to do after a retired city manager earned more than $500,000 last year. she made under $200,000 in base pay according to the palo alto daily post. however, the rules say she could cash in on unused vacation time and more than 2,000 hours in unused sick leave. when she did that, her pay skyrocketed to almost $527,000. city leaders are trying to figure out what to do to make sure it doesn't happen again in the future. back to the olympics where

college students with street names like molly, lightning bolt, even funky monkey, synthetic drugs, easy to find. how easy? investigative reporter went under cover to find out. didn't take long for the investigative unit to find people willing to sell synthetic drugs on the internet. one man asked the unit to meet him at berkeley. he planned to sell lightning bolt. the dea says it's a multibillion industry, one hard to stop because international drug dealers changed the chemical makeup of the synthetic drugs faster than the law can keep up. >> it's just grown in popularity because people are looking for a way to get that high but technically not doing something illegal. >> tonight the investigative unites goes under cover behind the scenes for a rare inside look at efforts to catch these raw drugs as they enter the united states. we'll talk to a recovering drug

"today in the bay's" janelle wang got a chance to talk to erin hamlin. >> reporter: a great moment. hamlin the first american ever to medal in a single luge event in the history of luge. when it started 50 years ago in olympics. i spoke to her one-on-one a couple of hours ago. history in the making, has it snunk yet? >> i don't think completely. getting my medal will make it for real. an amazing, almost 24 hours i guess. yeah. totally unexpected and i'm so thrilled. >> reporter: going down that icy chute, can you tell it's a medal run? >> by the fourth run i knew i had enough time in the bank if i had a clean run and nailed the entire course i would have been pretty good. so, about halfway down when i made it through tricky spots i was like, i think i can say i finally did it.

>> reporter: this her third olympics. third time's a charm. 27-year-old from a small town called remson, new york, population 500 people when she won the luge event, people started gathering in the streets for a makeshift parade. she hopes her win will bring more attention to the luge event. seems like it already has. reporting from sochi games, janelle wang, nbc bay area news. >> racing down that course, too. it was fun to watch. right now, nhl teammates are rivals as they get ready to compete in their home countries in sochi. >> that's right. comprises from everywhere. video of the men's u.s. team practicing out on the ice. u.s. team will face off against slovakia tomorrow then play russia saturday. >> san jose sharks, sending several players to compete in the olympics, patrick marleau and mark edward vlasic for

one person is dead after a fight starts in a downtown san jose nightclub and pours out on to the street. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. just after 1:00 this morning, police arrive near the intersection of santa clara and 1st to find a man with a stab wound. "today in the bay's" bob redell has been on the scene. bob, what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. what makes the story interesting or odd, if you will the suspect, the man accused of stabbing a man, did not appear to try to get away. stabbing took place down there, where you can see all of the police activity. this man was arrested a short time later after police arrived

>> we have a lot of witnesses, we sorted through most and still sorting through a few. homicide investigators are responding to the police department to speak to the other ones. >> reporter: it was witnesses who pointed out to police, it's that guy, that's the guy who had the knife, that's the guy you want to arrest, that's how they were able to catch up to him, again near our live location at west santa clara street. again, the street here on west santa clara shut down for a couple of blocks from our location to second. it's not clear how much longer police will be. my guess probably be maybe another hour or so. this is only about four, five hours old having happened around 1:15 this morning. the sixth homicide for the city of san jose in 2014 bob redell, "today in the bay." top story is the weather.

live look from san bruno camera. you can see low cloud cover over parts of san francisco this morning. san jose day, fog but nothing like yesterday. that looks pretty clear. let's collect in with meteorologist christina loren with a look at forecast. >> good morning, laura and scott. we have next fog in the tri-valley and this is where we are finding reduced visibility. at this point the fog is not bad, not close to as bad as it was yesterday at this time. the difference in san francisco. you can make out the embarcadero. nice, clear start here. we will see low clouds for the first part of the day, you saw from the live picture of san bruno, low ceilings out there. count on flight delays out of san francisco throughout the first part of the morning. santa rosa, 3/4 of a mile visibility. everybody else looking good north of the golden gate bridge. south of that point, 1 mile and a quarter vis visibility in half moon bay. livermore dropping off and as we

head throughout the morning hours, this is, like i said before, where we'll find the thick fog all morning long. the big weather story i want to talk about, though, the rain on the way. we could be tapping into that atmospheric river as of this weekend. it's a holiday weekend. people want to get outdoors. i'll break down your forecast in moments. >> developing story this morning. oakland police working with state and federal investigators after witnesses saw a man force his way into a car and abduct a teenager and elderly man. amber alert issued two hours later. "today in the bay's" christie smith live outside police headquarters gathering the latest in oakland. what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. oakland police say no sign of any of them this morning. so far, no one has reported anyone missing that matches the description of the victims. the elderly man and teenage girl, possibly 13. they think their best chance of solving this is finding the license plate that was issued on

the amber alert and the car attached to it. that and fbi enhanced video of the suspect take friend safeway surveillance video yesterday. police say the man allegedly caught a worker's attention there by stuffing lobster tails and steak under his jacket and threatening that worker wit a knife as he ran off outside. police believe that his baseball cap, jacket and headphones are probably recognizable to someone out there. this was about 1:00 at safeway on redwood near highway 13. he ran outside and appeared to car jack an elderly man and the teen girl. >> this is unthinkable, to go inside, you don't know if you're going back home. >> reporter: chp issued an amber alert for a burgundy infinity suv initially but the description was changed to the same license plate but now possibly being on a red sedan

with california license plate 6jfm648. signs this morning still lit up to reflect the sedan and license plate number. still a lot of questions, but amber alert remains in place. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:36. just in, two workers were airlifted from the tesoro refinery after injured on the job. just before 3:00 this morning, workers were burned, but it is unclear how badly. crews are still investigating exactly what happened. we'll give you more details as soon as we get them. also new this morning, police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian in san francisco's pacific heights. the crash happened just before 1:00 near van ness and pacific avenues. officers arrived in the area, found a person down in the road. that pedestrian pronounced dead at the scene. the driver is cooperating with

police. also new, chinese officials trying to figure out the extent of damage after a strong earthquake struck near xinjiang after 1:00 a.m. sparsely populated but officials worry because it was so big, there could be significant damage and casualties. the usgs reporting a magnitude 6.9. the china earthquake networks measured 7.3. there have been a series of other smaller aftershocks since that initial one. 5:37. sochi games where the u.s. and canadian women are playing as we speak in what many consider to be a preview of a gold medal game. last time two teams met, it ended like this, all-out brawl with punches thrown on both sides. make no mistake, they don't like each other. >> it's going to be a bloodbath. everything's on the line. every time we put the sweater on, you're representing your country and your part's bigger

you'll end up 65 degrees in belmont. we'll split the difference. north bay today, low 60s for santa rosa, plenty of fog for the first part of the day. sausolito 56. i told you before we have showers coming in. mostly for sonoma and marin county, that will be the case 3:00, 4:00. keep that in mind. east bay, of in oakland, cloud cover for the first part of the day. sun shining through about 11:00. pleasanton, sunshine by 8:00 p.m. as a result, two degrees shy of 70. temperatures are going to stay mild. we have rain on the way. but we'll get through a nice valentine's day across the bay area before rain moves in. south bay 67. peninsula at 66 for friday. 62 san francisco. and romantic 59 degrees for all of the lovers in wine country. mike, i'm going to send it over to you on that romantic note. romance in the traffic department, that's the question. >> folks are not getting together, good news. we don't want them getting together on the roadways, stay
